Job Description

GEMS Wellington Academy, Al Khail are looking to recruit a Careers Counsellor for September 2025. 

 

The Careers Counsellor plays a pivotal role in guiding students as they explore their career aspirations, higher education pathways, and post-18 options. The role is integral to fostering the school’s ethos, supporting students in developing healthy goals, mindsets, and behaviours. Working collaboratively with staff, parents, and external partners, the Counsellor ensures students are well-prepared to make informed decisions about their future. 

 

The ideal candidate should have a strong track record in effective provision of counselling and guidance to students.

 

Student Guidance and Counselling

  • Provide one-on-one and small-group career counselling for students. 
  • Guide students in exploring post-16 and post-18 pathways, including higher education, work experience/ apprenticeships, and employment. 
  • Prepare students for university interviews and facilitate mock interviews with external professionals. 
  • Support students in crafting personal statements, CVs, and application essays. 

 

Higher Education and Careers Programs

  • Coordinate the use of platforms such as Unifrog, UCAS, and the Common App. 
  • Deliver engaging presentations on topics such as personal statements, American college essays, student finance, and the future of work. 
  • Manage and develop the Year 10 and Year 12 work experience programs. 
  • Coordinate initiatives such as Med Soc, Oxbridge Society, and other student-led academic societies. 

 

Event Management and Stakeholder Engagement

  • Organise and oversee events, including careers fairs, university visits, Higher Education Evenings, and GCSE Options Evenings. 
  • Liaise with employers and professional bodies to expand opportunities for students. 
  • Collaborate with other GEMS schools to share resources and coordinate joint initiatives (e.g., Oxbridge Alumni Mock Interviews). 

 

Data Management and Administration

  • Maintain accurate student records, including exam results, progress data, references, and destination reports. 
  • Produce and submit required documents such as transcripts and application materials. 
  • Provide support on A-Level/BTEC and GCSE results days, assisting students with Clearing and decision-making.

 

Collaboration and Professional Development

  • Support staff in writing references and personal statements through training and resource development. 
  • Stay updated on labour market trends and integrate this knowledge into guidance resources. 
  • Actively participate in Parent-Teacher Consultations (Years 9–13) and other school events. 
  • Contribute to the wider school community by engaging in extracurricular activities and fostering a culture of aspiration and excellence. 
  • Foster strong relationships with students, parents, staff, and external stakeholders. 
  • Uphold the school’s commitment to excellence and holistic student development. 
  • Undertake any other duties at the discretion of the Assistant Principal or Leadership Team.

Skills

Essential: 

  • Bachelor’s degree 
  • Level 6 Careers Counselling and Guidance qualification (or equivalent). 
  • Fluency in English, with excellent communication skills. 
  • Knowledge of higher education admissions processes in the UK, USA, Canada, UAE, Europe, and Asia. 
  • In-depth understanding of higher education trends and developments globally. 
  • Familiarity with the British education system, including GCSEs, A Levels, and BTECs. 
  • Proficiency in relevant technological tools and resources. 
  • Strong organisational and event management skills. 
  • Commitment to participating in the school’s extracurricular and community life.

 Desirable: 

  • Specialist knowledge of applications to Oxbridge, Ivy League, and competitive programs (e.g., Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Science). 
  • Experience in international schools or working with diverse student bodies.
