Job Description
GEMS Wellington Academy – Al Khail is seeking to appoint an exceptional leader to join the Senior Leadership Team as Assistant Head – Senior School (Teaching and Learning) from August 2026. The successful candidate will support driving excellence in teaching, learning and academic standards across Years 7–13, ensuring consistently high-quality classroom practice and outstanding outcomes for all pupils.
Job Purpose
The Assistant Head (Teaching and Learning) will be accountable for driving the standards and consistency in learning skills in the classroom, ensuring all learners can reach their full potential at WEK. The Assistant Head Senior School (Teaching and Learning) will work with the Deputy Head Senior School (Teaching and Learning) to ensure there is high-quality teaching across all subjects and in every classroom, teachers are using data effectively to plan and best support learners in the classroom, and progress and attainment outcomes are outstanding for all pupils. The Assistant Head will also actively participate in whole-school self-evaluation and take responsibility for Whole School teaching and learning initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
Teaching and Learning:
- Support implementation of the Senior School teaching and learning strategy.
- Promote high standards of teaching and learning across departments.
- Support monitoring and evaluation of teaching quality through lesson observations, learning walks, and
feedback. - To work with the Deputy Head Senior School (Teaching and Learning) to oversee and monitor the effectiveness of learning and teaching including lesson observation, learning walks and work scrutiny, holding middle and senior leaders to account for the consistent implementation of the teaching and learning policy and Teaching Principles
Curriculum Implementation
- Support development, delivery, and review of the Senior School curriculum.
- Assist Heads of Department in curriculum planning and subject development.
- Ensure curriculum pathways support academic progression, examination preparation, and higher education readiness.
Assessment and Academic Progress
- Support implementation of assessment frameworks and progress tracking systems.
- Monitor student attainment and academic progress in collaboration with Heads of Department.
- Support analysis of internal and external examination results.
Assist in implementing academic intervention and support programmes.
Skills
- Strategic and operational leadership capability.
- Excellent communication, organisation, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to lead and inspire diverse teams across all phases.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Deep understanding of British curriculum frameworks, inspection standards (KHDA, BSO), and GEMS expectations.
- Recognised teaching qualification (PGCE or equivalent).
- Bachelor’s degree in Education or relevant field; Master’s degree or National Professional Qualification in Education (NPQ) preferred.
